Alta Video

Alta Video

Overview

Alta Video, an intelligent cloud-based video management system that transforms any CCTV camera into smart, proactive security solutions. Helps to gain real-time visibility and insights into threats from anywhere. Open, scalable, secure, and easy to use. Alta Video is equipped with integrated machine learning capabilities. It identifies objects and events, sending instant alarms based on rules and unusual activity detection. After acquisition in 2021 by Motorola Solutions the product continues its 2x growth YoY.

Scope

Currently I lead a team of 5 designers (3 UX designers and 2 VD designers) and 1 researcher for Alta Video as design director. At the moment I have stakeholder meetings to develop product visions, contribute to roadmap planning and play a key role in product management. Until acquisition I was part of the UX team and played a key role in the development of the product. I contributed to more than UX, I did market analysis, stakeholder presentations, planned the information architecture, did user flow development, concept development and User testing.

Information architecture

Alta Video's robust and intricate features require a well-structured information architecture for optimal user experience and scalability.

Scalability

Our biggest challenge was to create a scalable information architecture that allows categorization of tools and settings based on functionality, ensuring intuitive navigation even as new features are added. With 8 primary tools and expandable sub-structures, our system evolves to meet user expectations while maintaining clarity and ease of use. After 6 years it still stands and proves it scalable design.

Categories

A simple an intuitive product was created by categorizing based on use cases, the user can easily understand by looking at the names of the tools.

Infinitely scalable

I designed the navigation to allow a certain amount of flexibility due to specific video security requirements like, multiple monitor setup.

UX Design

I significantly contributed to the UX design of over 1,000 flows and 10,000 screens, meticulously crafted to deliver exceptional user experiences.

Feature highlights

Alta Video boasts a multitude of impressive features. However, I have selected the most user-beneficial and innovative feature to showcase here.

Timeline design

I designed the UX for the timeline and it underwent an extensive iterative process, as it was the first design intended to visually present computer vision data in a user-friendly manner and be one of our key differentiators. Showing graphs of the amount of movement detected from people and vehicles. Subsequently, Daria, our visual designer, transformed my UX designs for timelines into visually captivating designs ready for implementation.

Navigation

After acquisition, a new product family was created for Alta video and others. For unification purposes within the Alta product family the navigation had to be redesigned. I designed a new standard for current and future products, taking large and small information architecture trees into account.

Map view

I designed the map to provide users with a comprehensive overview of entire floors at a glance with all its security cameras. All devices, people detections, alarms and anomalies are represented on the map enabling users to stay up to date on all activities occurring across different floors for the entire building.

Product

Consistently outperforming competitors and garnering accolades, the product's success drives my team and me to continually strive for excellence. We embrace market challenges, ensuring our designs maintain the highest quality standards while capitalizing on untapped potential.

Anomaly detection

To assist the users with detecting events that might be of interest, we make the camera learn for 2 weeks what is potentially considered normal to allow the system to highlight an anomaly. We highlight anomalies on the timeline, the video and the map.

Smart presence

Find specific events on the map by easily finding people, vehicles and overall motion separately as info layers on the map.
